Everything is Shiny
Daniel Fone | September 15, 2008 on 11:23 am | In News In Tech |By far the dominating headline in this weeks news has been Google’s Chrome. Everyone seems to have their opinions and I certainly have mine. I think the best summary came from notnews.today.com:
Google’s new browser will give you their web and email services, photo processing, mapping, office applications that will run in said browser and will make you a cup of tea. This is all paid for by personally-directed text ads in your tea leaves, based on analysing a DNA sample taken when you sip the tea and sending your genetic code back to Google for future targeting
Yes, it’s fast. Yes, it’s well designed. And it’s the future. But in my opinion, Firefox just ain’t that broken yet.

Recapping on the whole sordid Gates-Seinfeld-Vista love triangle, we now have a second ad to digest. And as more pieces of this marketing conundrum fall into our hands, we are still left feeling slightly dazed. Personally, I thought this was about improving Vista’s tarnished image. But seriously…??? Perhaps we should conclude the following:
The incredibly rich duo try to connect on a “normal people” level and kind of fail utterly. Like Windows Vista. I think.
That being said, I do believe that this campaign will have punch line - it just beats the crap out of me why they haven’t got there yet.

One of the most interesting features of Chrome, Incognito, is being stolen verbatim by the Firefox crew. But it’s not going to be as private as you think:
But Mozilla’s name for the feature (which was originally planned for Firefox 3 but never made it in) is a bit of a misnomer. Upon entering “private mode,” all your information will still be accessible to the sites you access and your ISP will be able to track you wherever you go. In other words, you’re only hiding where you’ve been from those at home.
For the real security buff though, the only way to practice safe surfing is with a live CD. =D

I thought this bill+jerry ad was somewhat amusing. But the first one was a compete waste of my time and MS shareholder money, I really want to see how the shoes are incorporated into the $300 million punchline.
I think a few ads showing jerry touting the features of vista would have gone a long way to convince people to upgrade.
